How to Choose Dog Breeds With a Long Life Expectancy

January 8, 2019

You’ve probably heard that the dog breeds with long life expectancy are the small breeds. We have several theories on this subject. There are some of them that stand while others are plain stupid.

Approximately Fifty thousand dogs were used for a research experiment in Europe. The study concluded that big dogs somehow have a higher likelihood of dying younger because of how fast they age. For a lot, it seems like it makes no sense since we would assume that larger wild animals have a longer life expectancy than smaller animals.

However, there are a few large dog breeds that have good lifespans. This does not mean that they are exceptional. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of large dog breeds that are most likely to live long.

American Alsatian

A closer look will tell you the similarity of this breed to its ancestor the dire wolf. A creature that went extinct and lived sometime around the Paleolithic era. Its main diet consisted of different wild animals.

These dogs are being bred to be big, usually at least 90 pounds. It’s also bred to be healthy and live a long time. This breed is developed to be very large and to have a calm and non-aggressive personality, However, breeders are also focusing on health.

Alaskan Malamute

This is a large dog with a long lifespan. It weighs up to 40 kilos (90 pounds). Their lifespan is only up to 11 years according to a 2004 study in the United Kingdom. Majority of the studies show that problems like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and more with the eyes are common for this breed to have. Apart from the long potential life, it’s a very healthy breed.

As sled dogs, they require long walks, since they can also generate a lot of power. However, it has been an act for them to just relax and wait until you step in and command them to exercise or take them for a walk. This dog is not submissive, it’s also not easy to train.

This one has a great lifespan and is also one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. It’s a great personal protection dog. It was not just bred to guard.

These dogs have a certain image in some areas and societies. They’re actually raised to look a certain way, in this case, to intimidate. However, don’t worry because these dogs are specifically bred to be more tamed, good-natured, and friendly to most people. Plus they’re pretty loyal.

Some of the health issues facing them include: dilative cardiomyopathy, an inherited that causes death in a significant number of dogs. Some have genetic diseases that take extra effort to handle and take care of and more common problems like hip dysplasia require you to be very caring and considerate.

Anatolian Shepherd

Not everyone can handle this kind of dog. It’s a very powerful dog. One of its desirable qualities is the long life expectancy. It weighs up to 70 kilos (150 pounds). However, it can be smaller, around 40 kilos.

A British study claimed that their average lifespan was 11. This is longer than most breeds that are this size. However, there are owners who report having experienced living with a dog for more than 14 years.

Similar to large canines, this one develops health problems related to their hips so the dog parenst should be thoroughly checked before breeding. They are used in Africa to protect flocks of sheep and goats from cheetahs.

If you’re one of those people who want an extended experience with your dog, make sure to consider these dog breeds.
