Lets first look at some statistics: According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters in the USA each year. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs. Also, according to the ASPCA, 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year. Sadly, despite those impressive numbers, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized annually.
There are several ways to return healthy dogs from animal shelters to a more rewarding and meaningful life. One of them is fashion shows. Adoptable dogs are routinely featured in pet fashion. This is a great way to promote pet adoption events. In addition, it offers opportunities to raise funds for a non-profit organisation.

The New York Pet Fashion Show has been very successful in the past. Oehler Media Inc, is the show’s parent company, run by president and veteran publishing executive, Gregg Oehler. Another notable show is the Fashion for Paws. It is a nationally acclaimed luxury brand event that benefits the Humane Rescue Alliance. Fundraising ambassadors agree to raise substantial amounts of funds in the weeks leading up to the event. The top fundraiser receives the “Model Washingtonian of the Year” award. Planning a dog fashion show requires everything that goes into a human fashion show. In addition, involves managing pets and their parents. “Prior to the show, you need to do things like pick a theme, solicit partners, organise designers, hold casting calls, find the venue and arrange logistics,” tells us Laurren Darr, Founder of the International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals.
“During the show, you have to make sure that the announcer has the proper information, the stylist backstage is prepared with accessories and that the models are taken care of.” You need a panel dedicated judges, a great announcer that keeps everything running on the stage and an impeccable stylist that keeps things going on stage in a timely manner.
The pet population is currently growing and as a result fashion dog shows are becoming more common too. “I think that pet fashion shows are becoming more popular, because there are now more pets in U.S. households than children,” says Darr. As the popularity of social media grows, the more we have become accustomed to seeing pets humanised with outfits and costumes.
As some parents choose pets over having children, it has become more acceptable to treat pets as members of the family. For many families their dogs are their children. With this background it may not be surprising that dog fashion shows serve new purposes like rising funds for non-profit and rescue organisations and creating media attention in general. This trend is likely to continue not only in the USA but globally and we will see more dogs in fancy costumes and outfits.
